St. Mary’s Victorious in Corn Iomána
St. Mary’s made history by winning the Corn Iomána following a resounding victory over a spirited Tullyallen NS in the final in Darver on Monday the 12th of June. This was remarkable feat for the Drogheda school as it was their first ever hurling title.
St. Mary’s had to fight their way through a tricky group stage that featured Tullydonnell NS and the kingpins of Louth hurling Terminfeckin NS to reach the final. After safely disposing of Tullydonnell, the Drogheda men faced Terminfeckin. This match was played at a ferocious speed and the quality of the hurling on show was a joy to watch. St. Mary’s sealed the 5 point victory when Aviel Grimberg hammered an unstoppable shot high into the back of the Terminfeckin net. This goal paved the road to the final for St. Mary’s. In the final St. Mary’s were simply electric up front and a hat trick of strikes from ace goal poacher Tibor Krokove guaranteed the victory against their near neighbours Tullyallen NS. Throughout the tournament the whole team were simply immense. Goalkeeper Adam Gabryelczyk was assured throughout and his powerful puck out always put the Drogheda men on the front foot. Dual star Cathal Monaghan wonderfully marshalled his defence and he was ably assisted by the tenacious Gabriel Karkle and Cian Gregory. St. Mary’s dominance in midfield was largely down to the magnificent Max Kingston, who drove his team on with his wonderful striking skills under pressure. In midfield Max was accompanied by dual star Tiernan Rowley, who once again displayed why he is one of the most revered sportsmen in the school. Up front the industrious Paddy O’Connell and Aviel Grimberg hustled and harried for every single ball and deservedly got their rewards with some superb scores during the day. The true star of the show was Tibor Krokove, who produced a performance as inspirational as Lee Chin’s for Wexford versus Kilkenny on the day. Throughout the tournament Krokove’s prowess in front of goal was simply outstanding. With his tough tackling, deft stick-work and eye for goal the 5th class St. Mary’s man will be keen to add to his medal collection next year. There were also valuable contributions throughout the day from substitutes Kevin Howard, Rhys McGovern, Bowden Donnelly, Aaron Taaffe, Evan Black and Patrick Thornton. Overall it was a superb group effort by all the boys and as a school we are incredibly proud of their achievement. |

The Grand Tour
By Max Kingston
Maybe you want to go to the streets of France,
Or go to Spain and do the salsa dance.
A weekend trip to Madrid to have a glance,
Then back to Paris, the city of romance.
I hear Moscow is nice at this time of year,
But you better save your Rubles,
Because I hear it’s very dear!
But if it’s too expensive for your taste,
Latvia’s beautiful Riga is very near.
Travelling around to see new places,
Wonderful structures and beautiful spaces.
Europe is united,
Full of different races,
Something to be celebrated,
And not to be hated.
I’ve been to Germany and Greece,
I’ve travelled to Italy’s own Rome,
I’ve travelled around the world,
But Ireland is my home.

Coach Kavanagh: "Attitude is Everything"
There was an air of expectation at the sight of a UFC belt at St Mary’s Parish Primary School during the week, not in anticipation of an MMA bout, but rather at the arrival of John Kavanagh, coach of the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor.
Coach Kavanagh’s visit came following a letter he received from Cian Gregory, a 6th class student in the school. As part of a writing lesson Cian had sent a letter to his hero, John Kavanagh. In it he explained how he had overcome a serious injury and how he was inspired by the coach’s positivity and work ethic. Coach Kavanagh was so taken by the attitude in the letter that he made contact with the school and asked if he could pay a visit. And so with benches arranged like the famous ‘octagon’, the coach gave an inspirational talk to all 6th class students, many of whom had read his book and quizzed him on his life and experiences as one of the most famous MMA coaches in the world. He was not hugely into sport growing up but said that he always had a serious work ethic, something he credits to his father. He gave them examples from his own life and career working with athletes from many different sports. He spoke of the importance of exercise and a healthy diet, dealing with bullying and the importance of a positive approach to everyday situations. While admitting that he has only become a fan of GAA in recent years, he predicted a win for Dublin in 2017 - the only question being who would come second! There were a few surprises for Coach Kavanagh too, as some keen research had revealed that the day of the visit was also his birthday and the students presented him with a piece of artwork and a birthday cake! |
Maths Team Teaching 4th 2016/17
We did team teaching for eight weeks. It was a lot of fun. We liked team teaching because there were a lot of games, lots of problem solving, it was a break from normal work and it was lots of fun. One of our favourite activities was the tablets. On the tablets we played King of maths and Khan academy. Another activity we liked was the tangrams. It is an old Chinese game. What you do is, you have some shapes and you have to try and make an animal, person or anything else. We thought it was better than normal class work because we worked together and there was more than one teacher and you can learn while having fun. I found team teaching really good because it helped me alot with fractions. by Lea Pederson (4th Class) |
